Things to Do

Or, just as often — things not to do. Karuna is surrounded by forest and peaks, with room to walk, read, sit, and let the day pass at its own pace.

The Rock

At the top of the adjoining hill is The Rock — a broad flat summit that looks over the whole valley. It's the favourite spot for sunrise (about 6:30 am) and equally good for sunset. A short steady climb gets you there in under an hour. Bring water. Watch for wild boar and bison on the path.

Walks & treks

Forest on either side, peaks above, the valley below. Paths for a short stroll after breakfast, or an all-day trek with spectacular views, tropical forest, and wildlife. The eucalyptus groves just above Karuna are particularly beautiful in the early light.

For the adventurous: walk down to Addukam, a remote, traditional village. Spend the night, interact with the villagers, and the next morning continue down through coffee and cardamom plantations and forests to Periyakulam on the plains. Return by bus up the hills. A three-day round trip if you take it slowly.

The waterfall

A short walk down from the cottages is a quiet forest pool fed by a twin waterfall — cold clear water, a deep green plunge pool, and ferns and moss everywhere. Good for a morning swim, a long sit, or an afternoon of simply listening to the water. For many guests this is the quietest spot at Karuna.

Daily yoga

The morning class is free for all guests. Afternoon yoga or yoga nidra is available on request, as are classes for children. If you'd rather self-practice, the yoga hall is open to you at a small donation for stays of a week or more. See Daily Yoga for full details.

At Govinda's

The café is the community space — carrom, chess, UNO, backgammon. A small exchange library where you can swap a book or borrow something interesting. A good place to meet other guests and hear where they've been.

Private classes

  • Pottery — seasonal, check for availability when you arrive.
  • Spiritual library — in the yoga centre. Books can be borrowed for free with a small deposit.

Rest

Honestly, this is what most guests come for. Rooms with fireplaces, beautiful quiet spots to sit and read, sunrise over the valley, and time that moves at the pace of the weather. That is also something to do.
